RACMA supports Close the Gap Day, 17 March 2022
RACMA recognises the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and is committed to strive for improved healthcare outcomes for First Nation’s people.
As such the College acknowledges the significance of Close the Gap Day, which advocates for health equity of Australia’s indigenous people and educates the public about the health issues and barriers to well-being they face. The campaign raises awareness for the poor health suffered by many indigenous Australian groups and the lack of resources available to these populations.
Through the Indigenous Health Working Group (IHWG), RACMA is deepening its commitment for improved health, safety and education of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in Australia.
IHWG Chair Dr Luis Prado said the recent Four Corners investigation into the ongoing problem of rheumatic heart disease deaths in remote Australian communities highlighted the urgent need for increased access to healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“As Medical Leaders we have a critical role in working with key decision makers to speed up the health reforms needed to change the current disparity in the delivery and access to healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in rural and remote areas, compared to that of non-Indigenous Australians,” Dr Prado said.
“It is about ensuring all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have access to and a choice of healthcare, and that the healthcare system is responsive and sensitive to cultural and linguistic differences. Otherwise the life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples will continue to remain where it is – 10 to 17 years lower than that of non-indigenous Australians.”
The College encourages its Members to support this important campaign every day of the year within our key leadership roles to make sure the necessary changes happen, Dr Prado said.
